The FATF conducts mutual evaluations of countries to assess their compliance with established standards on money laundering, terrorist financing, and proliferation financing. These evaluations help countries detect gaps in their AML/CFT systems and identify areas for improvement.
Lao PDR was evaluated in 2022, with the report published in 2023. Mutual evaluations examine the effectiveness of a country’s laws, regulations, supervisory and enforcement mechanisms, related to its ability to combat money laundering, terrorist financing, and their predicate offences.
The Post-Observation Period Report (POPR) is a follow-up mechanism to the mutual evaluation. ILSTA Luxembourg is currently supporting Lao authorities in the preparation of their POPR.
