Open lecture on Human Rights

ILSTA held an open lecture on Human Rights by Dr. Lone Lindholt, who shared her experience as a human rights researcher and advisor over two decades in Asia, Africa and Europe. Dr Lone said that working in the area of human rights requires a long-term perspective, as the gap between what should be the case and the actual reality is often considerable. She shared her theoretical model, which shows how different societies favour either the enjoyment of individual rights or lean more to a protection of collective rights, and explained how this is not fixed over time but rather shifts and is influenced by political trends or international crises, as we saw with Covid-19.
Participants took the opportunity to ask questions on issues such as limiting or suspending rights under certain conditions and how cultural or religious rights can interfere with other basic individual rights.
110 students, lecturers and legal practitioners attended the lecture at the Faculty of Law and Political Science, as well as 40 online participants from the Faculty of Law and Administration (FLA) in Champasak and branches of the National Institutes of Justice (NIJ) Pakse, Savannakhet, and Luang Prabang, on 5 April, 2023.
