On 14 June, ILSTA held an open lecture titled “Approaching Legal Cases with a Legal Mind” by Dr. Yuzuki Nagakoshi. The interactive lecture featured a Japanese landmark supreme court case from 1973 concerning patricide. Students were encouraged to “think like a lawyer” and challenged to argue both sides while exploring possible sentencing, mitigating factors, and the constitutionality of the underlying legal clause imposing heavier punishment for patricide. Students developed skills of putting their innate sense of justice into legal parlance and thinking beyond the literal provision of the law.
