The Office of the Supreme People’s Prosecutor of the Lao PDR organised with ILSTA the National Conference on Effective Implementation of Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Financing of Terrorism Measures.
During the conference, a lot of attention was put on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and its 40 recommendations, which provide a structured framework for countries to effectively address money laundering, terrorist financing, and proliferation financing. The conference featured a lineup of international experts, ILSTA and Luxembourg, who presented on the specific FATF compliance requirements of the recommendations, be it for the public or private sector and the Mutual Evaluation process.
An important panel discussion provided vital insights from the Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) of Cambodia, the Philippines, Thailand, who shared their valuable experiences and lessons learned in undergoing FATF AML/CFT compliance work and important points in the evaluation process.
The Attorney General’s office of Thailand also provided critical support by explaining the process of mutual legal assistance in criminal matters and presenting a number of significant case studies.
The National Conference, which aimed to offer practical guidance to law enforcement officers and financial institutions, drew participation from all relevant government parties.
The event saw more than 380 representatives from all provinces and line authorities from the Central State in attendance.
As with the previous National Conference wrapped up with a set of conference recommendations which will be implemented over one year. One of these recommendations is to carry out 3 regional events under the same theme.
The event was supported by the Ministry of Finance from Luxembourg as Lux-Aid development.
